Rashidi Yekini: Gateway United Commemorates 12th Death Anniversary

12 years after the passing of Nigeria’s all-time leading goalscorer, Rashidi Yekini, Gateway United joins fans and the icon’s family in celebrating and honoring the legacy of the Kwara State-born striker.

Yekini wasn’t just a legend in Nigerian football; he was a true ambassador of the sport, inspiring countless young footballers with his achievements even today.

Reflecting on Yekini’s illustrious career and his impact on Gateway United during his brief tenure in 2005, Niyi Soleye, the acting General Manager, reminisced:

“Yekini was not only a prolific goalscorer but also a gentleman respected by teammates and opponents alike. His 37 goals for Nigeria remain unmatched, a testament to his talent and dedication.”

Soleye fondly recalled Yekini’s time at Gateway United, describing it as a pivotal moment for the club and its supporters.

“I vividly remember his arrival like it was yesterday. As club secretary then, it was an honor to witness such a caliber of player join us. He seamlessly adapted to our style, boosting morale both on and off the pitch.”

“While his passing in 2012 under controversial circumstances was tragic, his legacy continues to inspire future Nigerian footballers.”

Yekini made his mark in Nigerian club football, notably with Shooting Stars and Abiola Babes, before conquering Europe. His dynamic style and impressive goal-scoring prowess made him a formidable force.

During his brief stint at Gateway United in April 2005, alongside former national teammates Sani Abacha and Jude Edemba, Yekini made 26 appearances, netting 7 goals. His contributions were invaluable, etching a special chapter in the club’s history.

Yekini’s demise on May 4, 2012, at 48, deeply saddened the football world. He was laid to rest at his family compound in Ira, Kwara State.
