Child Protection: “Resuscitate Children’s Parliament” – CPN Presents 20-Point Recommendations To Oyo Govt.

Child Protection Network, CPN, Oyo state has issued a 20 point recommendations to Oyo state government on measures and mechanisms to be put in place in order to strengthen measures to curb the menace of child abuse:

The network while presenting the recommendations during a peaceful rally to the office of the governor, Secretariat Agodi, Ibadan urged the state to prioritize full implementation and enforcement of the articles of the Child’s Rights Law of Oyo State 2006 through the establishment of Child Protection Clubs in all schools in Oyo State to further complement the work of the Family court

The recommendations read as follows:

1. A Child Protection Budget is needed to implement the necessary steps to address the issue as lack of dedicated funds has hampered the desired work on Child Protection for prevention and response to cases.

2. A full implementation and enforcement of the articles of the Child’s Rights Law of Oyo State 2006 through the establishment of Child Protection Clubs in all schools in Oyo State to further complement the work of the Family court

3. Compile and produce Oyo State Child Protection Policy to be implemented and enforced in all institutions in Oyo State.

4. As most abuses are on children from poor underserved families in urban and rural settings, there is a need for a coherent Social Protection System that will address the root causes of violence and abuse on children.

5. Resuscitate the Children’s Parliament.

6. Prosecute Offenders or perpetrators of child sexual abuse by public Naming/Shaming by putting in place Offenders Register.

7. Strengthen the various Task Forces to ensure a continuous and effective sanitation of the State by enforcing the existing laws (Child Rights Law of Oyo State 2006, Violence Against People Prohibition Law 2020, amongst others)

8. The state government should strengthen partnerships with all stakeholders in the private and civil society sectors to facilitate a safe environment for our children.

9. Collaborate with the office of Her Excellency on a state wide campaign against increasing sexual and gender based violence against children in Oyo State

10. Establish one-stop Sexual Assault Response Centres in the different zones of Oyo State

12. Deinstitutionalize alternative care in Oyo State to enhance the smooth and transparent adoption process.

13. Relocate the proposed housing estate at Trans Amusement Park to Ilu Tuntun.

14. Establish Social Welfare Trust Fund to enhance public private partnership towards alleviating the plights of the vulnerable, underserved, and victims of abuse in the society

15. Ensure children on the streets are taken off and returned to school

16. Create an enabling environment for students in schools by renovating dilapidated buildings, building of toilets, and conveniences.

17. Employ qualified teachers for the primary schools in Oyo State

18. Establish ICT Hubs in different wards for students.

19. Have consistent dialogues/ engagements with the CSO communities in Oyo State.

20. Provide vehicles for rescue interventions in case management.
