A tricycle rider on Thursday, assaulted an officer of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) who was on enforcement operation.
According to eyewitnesses, the OYRTMA team got to Mokola, Ibadan, to correct illegal parking when the tricycle rider, who parked in front of a commercial bank, became aggressive and fought the officers.
The assaulted officer, Toheeb Abbas was severely injured in the attack and was left blood-soaked.
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The Chairman, OYRTMA, Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd) condemned the assault, describing it as a shocking incident.
He stated that “attacking our officers is equivalent to fighting the government’s efforts to ensure public safety and protect lives and property.”
“The perpetrators will face the full weight of the law,” the Chairman warned.
Adekoya stressed further that, the incident highlights the growing concern over violence against enforcement officers in the state.
The OYRTMA Chairman vowed that this will not deter officers, saying “we will continue in our efforts to maintain law and order on the roads, despite the challenges”.
While the tricycle operator should be punished for attacking the officer, the management need to caution the excess of the officers too.
Well, you’re right, we also believe that thorough investigation should be done on the matter to ensure the officers are civil while the transporters should see them as partners in progress
