In a bid to enhance effective governance and community cohesion at the grassroots level, the Oyo State House of Assembly’s Standing Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters, and State Honours recently organized a two-day capacity-building workshop for ward councillors in Lagelu Local Government Area of the State.
The workshop, themed “Enacting Legislation (By-Laws) for Socio-Economic Development in Response to Local Challenges and Realities,” aimed to equip local government leaders with critical tools to navigate and resolve disputes effectively within their communities and strengthen the legislative capabilities of ward councillors.

Hon. Dele Adeola, representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju Constituency, highlighted the importance of effective conflict management in promoting harmonious community relations, improving governance, and ensuring responsive local leadership.

He emphasized that managing conflicts constructively is key to building trust and delivering impactful services to communities.
Hon. Akintunde Olajide, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters, and State Honours, explained that the programme was designed to empower grassroots legislators to craft impactful and context-specific by-laws that address the unique needs of their constituencies.
On the topic of “Mode of Exercising Legislative Power of the Council in Management and Processing of Parliamentary Business in the Local Government,” Hon. Olajide noted that the effective exercise of legislative power would have a positive impact on local governance, enabling the council to make informed decisions, respond to community needs, and promote development.
He however urged participants to ensure that the workshop leads to a change in orientation, recognizing their purpose as legislators is to support the executive and achieve more infrastructural projects in their communities.
In his address, Councillor Idogbe Aduragbemi, Leader of the Legislative Arm, Lagelu Local Government, expressed gratitude to the Executive Governor of the State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, and the Executive Chairman, Lagelu Local Government, Hon. Mudasiru Kamorudeen, for creating an avenue for capacity building that emphasizes the importance of effective local legislation in driving inclusive development.
