Rescue Mission under the leadership of Alh. Sharafadin Adedemi, The King of Rescue Mission and other government agencies have expressed readiness to team up with Human Rights Organizations and the media to combat the trafficking of women and girls in Iraq and other countries.
This is contained in a communique issued at the end of a meeting of civil society network working against human trafficking.
The Work In Freedom programme would focus on the trafficking of Nigerians and conscripting them as domestic slaves in the homes of Iraqis and the garment industries where they are either paid not substantially to take care of themselves or nothing at all.
Some are allegedly trafficked through known labor illegal routes from Iraq to the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, and other Middle-East countries.
King of Rescue Mission Alh. Sharafadin Adefemi opined that due to the large number of women and girls at risk of being victims because of the need to support their families, it has become exceedingly crucial that a solution is found and concrete supportive evidence for presentation which would help in the fight against human trafficking and exploitation of Nigerians abroad, especially in Iraq.
Others observed that based on data gathered from 155 countries, it offers the first global assessment of the scope of human trafficking and what is being done to fight it. It also includes an overview of the patterns of human trafficking; legal action taken; and country-specific information on reported cases of trafficking in persons, victims, and prosecutions.
Meanwhile, a journalist and human rights activist from Oyo State, Amb. Wale Adeoye also called all agencies and other organizations to work hand-in-hand to make sure human trafficking is brought to the barest minimum, if not completely eradicated, and the culprits made to face the full wrath of the law.
“The lives of thousands of Nigerian young women and men are presently in danger in Iraq due to this illegal business. While thousands are being maltreated daily, others are being killed like animals”.
“We called on the Federal Government of Nigeria under the able leadership of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the State governments, The National of Assemblies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, IOM, NAPTIP, and the Human Rights Organization to be more proactive concerning the plight of young Nigerian women working in different parts of Iran.
