BREAKING – Minimum Wage: NLC, TUC Declare Nationwide Strike
NLC, Nigeria Labour Congress and its Trade Union Congress, TUC, counterpart have directed Nigerian workers across the country to stay at home for a national strike as from Monday, June 3rd, 2024.
The decision followed the inability of the tripartite committee to agree on a new minimum wage.
President, TUC, Mr Festus Osifo announced the strike in Abuja on Friday 31st May, 2024 at a joint press conference with the leadership of the NLC
According to the union leaders, the decision follows the expiration of an earlier request to the Federal Government to conclude all negotiations for a new minimum wage before the end of May.
Report has it that, Friday’s talks on minimum wage between the Federal Government and Organised Labour hit a deadlock when the government failed to shift grounds on the N60,000 it proposed during the last meeting.
Recall that the NLC and TUC had given a May 31, 2024 ultimatum on the new minimum wage.
On Tuesday, talks between the Federal Government and organised Labour broke down after the government and organised private sector raised their offers to N60,000.
The government added N3,000 to its initial offer of N57,000 proposed last week, taking the total figure to N60,000.
