The game ended 3-2 in favour of the Portuguese side.
In other matches played on Thursday Switzerland edged Cameroon by a lone goal, Uruguay and South Korea played a goalless draw, while Brazil defeated Serbia 2 nil.
The second round of the group fixtures begins today with Wales taking on Iran before Host Nation Qatar play African Champions Senegal.
