Oyo Assembly To Investigate Activities Of Local Government Councils • Suspends LG Chairman

The activities of all thirty-three (33) Local Government Chairmen in the state will be thoroughly investigated by the Oyo State House of Assembly.

An Investigation Into The Activities Of The Local Government Chairmen In The State would be From July 2021 till date.

This followed a the motion jointly sponsored by Hon. A.O. Mustapha (Kajola) and Hon. A.A. Rasaq (Ibadan South East I).

The motion claimed that since the appointment of the local government chairmen by the governor of Oyo state, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 1, 2021, the activities of each local government have been managed by the chairmen in their respective domains in order to meet the needs of the people and provide basic amenities for the general public as

Given the aforementioned constitutional obligations to Local Government Chairmen, community leaders, politicians, and other relevant parties revealed that some Chairmen have lived up to expectations in line with the state’s development strategy, while others have fallen short of expectations, which impedes progress.

The Honourable Members claimed that in response to the cries of the people in councils where there were issues, it is necessary for the assembly to strengthen their oversight functions over local government as permitted by Section 128 of the 1999 Constitution in order to achieve a true representation of their people (as amended).

the State House of Assembly also directed all the 33 Council bosses in the State to submit reports of their activities within the next 2weeks.
The report must contain detailed information on the income and expenditure of all the LG councils and their Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs and this also includes funds allocation, Internally Generated Revenue, IGR , programs and projects executed between January and July, 2022.

Meanwhile, The Olorunsogo Local Government Chairperson, Mrs. Oluwakemi Julianah Akanni, and Vice Hon. Badmus Mutiu Adesoji were subsequently suspended by lawmakers for a period of two weeks.

This came after two letters of petition written by representatives of the Olorunsogo Local Government Exco and traditional council, respectively.

This was contained in a petition titled: ”Total Exclusiveness From The Government Of Olorunsogo Local Government By The Chairperson Hon.Oluwakemi Julianah Akanni Ika Of Executive Members”

Hon.Alaba Felicia (Super for Health)

However, the Oyo Assembly said that Hon. BAMIKUNLE EZEKIEL ADETUNJI, the leader of the House in Olorunsogo local government, will assume control of the administration of the local government within the time frame.

In the same vein, the Speaker, Rt Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin has announced the lawmaker representing Lagelu state constituency, Honourable Akintunde Olajide as the new Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

This followed the demise of the former Chairman of the committee, Honourable Olusegun Ademola Popoola, who represented Ibadan South East constituency II.
