Oyo Assembly Commission Trains Sergeant-at-Arms, Restates Commitment To Staff Development
The Oyo State House of Assembly Service Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the security architecture of the state legislature through continuous capacity building, following the successful conclusion of a two-day training programme on security alertness for officers of the Sergeant-at-Arms Department and other relevant officers in the Legislative Service.
The workshop, held on Thursday and Friday at the Local Government Staff Training School, State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, was designed to equip participants with modern security skills and strategies required to effectively safeguard the legislative institution amid evolving security challenges.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chairman of the Oyo State House of Assembly Service Commission, Hon. Femi Julius Okedoyin, described the training as another demonstration of the Commission’s unwavering commitment to building a professional, efficient, disciplined and security-conscious Legislative Service capable of meeting the demands of a modern parliament.
He stressed that the security of the legislature remains fundamental not only to the smooth conduct of legislative activities but also to the protection of lives, property, official documents and the preservation of democratic institutions.
According to him, the changing nature of security threats has made it imperative for officers responsible for protecting the Assembly to remain vigilant, proactive and adequately equipped with contemporary knowledge and practical skills.
Hon. Okedoyin explained that the carefully designed training programme exposed participants to emerging security realities, intelligence gathering, emergency response procedures, access control mechanisms, conflict management, surveillance techniques and other global best practices aimed at enhancing their operational effectiveness.
“As officers occupying strategic positions within the legislative arm of government, you constitute the first line of defence in ensuring a safe and secure environment for Honourable Members, management, staff, visitors and all stakeholders conducting official business within the Oyo State House of Assembly,” he said.
The Commission’s Chairman expressed profound appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening public institutions through sustained investment in human capital development.
He noted that the Governor’s continuous support for capacity-building programmes has created opportunities for public servants to improve their competence, productivity and service delivery, while also appreciating the Governor’s consistent support for the activities of the Oyo State House of Assembly Service Commission.
Hon. Okedoyin also commended the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, for his exemplary leadership, which he said has continued to promote excellence, innovation and professionalism within the legislature.
According to him, the Speaker’s passion for institutional development and staff capacity building has remained a major source of encouragement to the Commission in implementing programmes aimed at strengthening the Legislative Service.
The Chairman assured members of staff that the Commission remains resolute in its commitment to continuous professional development across all cadres within the Legislative Service.
He disclosed that regular training programmes, workshops, seminars and other capacity-building initiatives would continue to be organised to equip staff with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to excel in their respective responsibilities.
The two-day workshop featured intensive sessions on intelligence gathering, security alertness, emergency response, access control, conflict management, surveillance operations and other contemporary security practices designed to strengthen the capacity of officers responsible for protecting the Oyo State House of Assembly.
The workshop was attended by members of the Oyo State House of Assembly Service Commission, including Commissioner I, Hon. Moses Ojoawo; Commissioner II, Mr. Oladeji Olanrewaju; Commissioner III, Mr. Adekunle Alabanla; and Commissioner IV, Hon. Bamidele Ojo, alongside management staff of the Commission and participants drawn from the Sergeant-at-Arms Department and other relevant units of the Legislative Service.
