OAU Begins Probe Into Case Of Assault Between Lecturer, Student

Authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, , ile-ife, have begun a probe into a fracas that involved a male student and a lecturer of the university.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju stated this while speaking with newsmen in ile-ife on the incident.

Mr Olarewaju who said the management would go administrative and made its findings known observed that the Vice-Chancellor had invited the dean of the faculty involved for questioning and called on the students to remain calm

According to report, a 200 level student identified as Gift suddenly dashed into a lecture room where the lecturer identified as Doctor Ariyo, was conducting a class yesterday.

The student was said to have mistaken the class for the one he was to attend and quickly made attempt to exit upon realizing when the lecturer called him back.

The lecturer was said to have engaged the student in an argument leading to a physical assault from the lecturer against the student.

In one of the videos of the incident that circulated online, the student was seen struggling with a man said to be a security official while also making an attempt to press his phone when the lecturer shouted on him to switch off the phone

The lecturer was seen struggling to take the phone from the student whose back was already on the wall

He was subsequently seen throwing a punch at the student afterward as other students in the class watched in amazement.

Reacting, The Students’ Union spokesperson, mr Elijah Omisore who. condemned the incident said the union was demanding that the lecturer be prosecuted.

Mr Elijah added that union demands an open hearing and a public apology from Doctor Ariyo, to the generality of the students and that other students in the class won’t face any form of victimisation
