Flood Wreaks Havoc In Ogbomoso As NEMA Assesses Level Of Damages

Millions of naira worth of goods and property including residential buildings, shops, bridges, household items, fish ponds, poultry farms, electrical poles and cables have been destroyed at Ogbomoso North and South areas of Oyo state.

South west Zonal coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mr Kadiri Olanrewaju disclosed this while briefing stakeholders in Ibadan on the assessment exercise carried out on the affected areas.

Mr. Olanrewaju who was represented by the assistant Zonal coordinator, Mr. Kazeem Olanrewaju during the assessment exercise said several families have been displaced and are currently living with relatives.

He said “Following a distress call regarding flooding in various communities within Ogbomoso North and Ogbomoso South Local Government Areas of Oyo State, the South West Zonal Office, in collaboration with the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA) and local government representatives, conducted an assessment of the affected areas on October 10, 2024.

The assessment team, which was led by Mr. Olanrewaju Kazeem expressed sympathy to the affected residents and encouraged them to adopt Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies, emphasizing the importance of avoiding construction on waterways and floodplains.

“The flood caused extensive damage to residential buildings, shops, bridges, household items, fish ponds, poultry farms, electrical poles and cables and other valuables, with losses amounting to millions of Naira.

“Several families have been displaced and are currently staying with relatives.

“The affected residents have appealed to the government for assistance, while also hoping for a permanent structural solution to prevent future occurrences.
