According to the most recent FIBA rankings, Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress, is ranked ninth in the world.
As one of the top 10 teams worldwide, the six-time AfroBasket champions rose four spots in the list announced by the world basketball governing body on Thursday.
The D’Tigress, ranked eighth in the most recent standings, are the first African team, male or female, to enter the top 10 of the FIBA world rankings.
The team’s spectacular success in the Olympics in Paris may have contributed to their historical rise in the world rankings.
D’Tigress became the first African team to compete in the Olympic Quarterfinals by defeating both Australia and Canada in the group round.
But in the quarterfinals, the USA finally put an end to the team’s successful Olympic run.
The D’Tigress’ brilliant performance earned head coach, Rena Wakama the best coach of the women’s basketball event.
The US, the Olympic champions, retain the top spot in the global ranking, followed by Australia and France.
