A nationwide strike has been threatened by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The federal government’s inability to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities was criticized by the union, describing it as a factor responsible for its decision to threaten nationwide strike.
The union also criticized the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government for what it perceived to be a callous attitude towards issues concerning academics at Nigerian Federal Universities.
ASUU also criticized the university system’s 25% pay increase for other academic staff members and 35% wage increase for professors saying the union declared that it considered the pay increase to be a wage award that the government can revoke at any time.
Speaking during the briefing, the President of the union, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke noted that it has given the Tinubu-led government enough time to set things in motion.
Osodeke noted that the union was also concerned over the failure of the Federal Government to appoint members of Governing Councils for Federal owned universities.
Osodeke also noted that the dissolution of the governing councils was illegal as it was against the principles guiding the existing universities.
