World Breastfeeding Week: Oyo Govt. Restates Commitment To Improving Maternal, Child Health
As part of activities to commemorate the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week, the Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving maternal and child health by supplying maternal care facilities to healthcare centres across the state.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi made this known at Adeoyo Maternity Hospital, Yemetu, Ibadan, during an event which brought together health professionals, nursing mothers, government officials and other stakeholders to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding in ensuring healthy growth and development for children.
Dr. Ajetunmobi in her remarks highlighted the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, while revealing that the Oyo State Government has provided facilities and infant formula to support breastfeeding mothers, demonstrating its commitment to improving maternal and child health.
Also speaking at the event, The Director of Nutrition at the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board , Dr. Khadijat Alarape, stated that the State Government has approved six months maternity leave for nursing mothers, adding that the Board is proposing an additional two weeks of maternity leave to further ease the transition for new mothers and make the period less stressful.
Some Nursing mothers who participated at the event encouraged other mothers to practice exclusive breastfeeding, which they believe will support healthy growth and contribute to a child’s cognitive development and overall well-being.
The theme for 2026 World Breastfeeding Week is “Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: strengthen what works.”
