Sango Fire: Oyo Assembly Legislator, Babajide Makes Case For Victims During Plenary.

Oyo state house of assembly has appealed to the executive to provide immediate succour to victims of fire incident that engulfed many shops at popular Sango market in Ibadan on the 4th of February, 2024.

This followed a matter of urgent public importance brought to the house on Thursday by the lawmaker representing Ibadan North constituency 2, Mr Gabriel Babajide during plenary.

Mr Babajide in his plea also urged the Local Government Chairman of Ibadan North to provide immediate palliatives for victims of the fire incident while State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, should visit the scene of the fire inferno with a view to providing necessary materials to victims of the fire incident

The lawmaker also appealed to the Ministry of Information and Orientation, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State and other information dissemination Agencies of Government to intensify sensitisation on the need to be safety conscious so as to prevent the occurrence of fire during the dry season

He said “Notes that there was a fire incident at Sango market on Sunday 4th of February, the fire incident which started around 7.00 pm, on Sunday evening lasted for about 2hrs hours before it was put out, twenty four (24) shoos were affected with goods worth over One Hundred (100) Million Naira burnt down completely. It took the intervention of neighbours around the market and men of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency who salvaged the situation as the fire inferno could have affected more shops.

“Further notes that most of the traders affected are old and aged whose source of livelihood depend solely on their shops, they mostly range between age forty (40) to eighty five (85). It quite, disheartening how the fire incident rendered most of them shopless”

“Aware that as a matter of utmost importance my humble self I with the PDP candidate for Ibadan North Local Government Chairmanship election visited the fire incident scene to ascertain the level of damage in the market.

He explained that it was important for the State Government to have an enlightenment campaign to orientate people on the importance of fire safety and fire fighting mechanism during this season, as a lot of fire incident have been reported across the State while property woth billions have been lost

“Observes that it is important to urgently plead with the State Government to help support the victims of this fire inferno immediately so as to safe their sanity and restore their sources of livelihood.”

Reacting, speaker of the house, Rt Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin appealed to the executive to cushion the effect of the fire incident buy extending hands of assistance to the victims.
