Oyo Govt. Declares Soun’s Removal of Balogun of Ogbomoso Illegal

The Oyo State Government has declared that the purported removal of Dr. Saka Adegbite Balogun as the Balogun of Ogbomoso by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, is contrary to the state’s existing chieftaincy law.

The government maintained that Dr. Balogun remains the duly recognised Balogun of Ogbomoso land, urging members of the public to disregard reports of his purported removal.

The position was contained in a statement issued on Friday, October 23, 2026, by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ademola Ojo.

According to the statement, Section 26(1) of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State, 2000, vests the power to appoint, suspend and depose holders of Part II recognised chieftaincy titles exclusively in the state governor.

The government consequently described the reported action by the Soun of Ogbomoso as an aberration, arguing that it was not recognised under the existing legal framework governing traditional council operations in the state.

“In the light of this, Dr. Saka Adegbite Balogun is the duly recognised Balogun of Ogbomoso land,” the statement declared.

The government further called on members of the public to disregard any announcement or report suggesting that Dr. Balogun had been removed from the chieftaincy position.

The statement reaffirmed the state government’s position on the legal authority governing the appointment, suspension and removal of recognised traditional titleholders in Oyo State.
