The 2027 governorship campaign of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Oyo State received a boost on Wednesday as the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) for schools and colleges and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) expressed support for the party’s governorship candidate, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi.
Adekanmbi was a guest of the unions at a meeting held in Oyo town on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, where the unions acknowledged what they described as the positive impact of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration on workers’ welfare while presenting their expectations for the education sector.
Speaking on behalf of NASU in the state, Comrade Folorunsho Oluwabunmi, who is also the Oyo State Treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), commended the Makinde administration over workers’ welfare.
She, however, presented a memorandum of requests to Adekanmbi, with the introduction of a “peculiarity allowance” for NASU members listed as a major demand, given that non-academic staff in schools and colleges work throughout the year, including during holidays.
Similarly, the Oyo State Secretary of the NUT/Academic Staff Union for schools and colleges, Comrade Ayo Adekunle, who represented the state chairman, Comrade Ranti Oluwemimo, commended the Makinde administration for what he described as stable payment of salaries, pensions and other emoluments.
Adekunle also highlighted other expectations of teachers, including improved car and housing loans, rural allowances for teachers in remote communities, easier processing of Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), introduction of electronic lesson notes, digitisation of schools and regular training and retraining of teachers.
Contributing to the meeting, Comrade Mustapha A.A., the ODEC Chairman covering Oyo, Ogbomoso and Oke-Ogun, raised concerns over delays in promotions and the payment of outstanding leave grants.
The Oyo NUT Zonal Chairman for Oyo, Comrade Fakorede Phillip, meanwhile, declared support, on behalf of the members, for candidates of the Allied Peoples Movement in the state.
Responding to the various demands, Adekanmbi assured the unions that salaries, pensions and statutory emoluments would remain protected under his administration, just as they have been under Governor Makinde.
He said other requests presented by the unions would be reviewed if elected governor, adding that his administration would prioritise first-hand information and remain responsive to issues affecting residents.
Adekanmbi also outlined some of his proposed programmes for the education sector, including curriculum upgrades, digitisation, e-learning and capacity-building programmes for teachers and education workers.
The meeting ended with expressions of confidence in Adekanmbi’s candidacy, with representatives of the unions assuring the APM candidate of their willingness to mobilise support for the party ahead of the 2027 election.
