A popular nollywood actor Jide Adegbite also known as Miliki Daddy has criticized the proposed ban of sachet water, known as Pure Water by the Lagos State government beginning from 2025.

The Lagos State government recently announced intentions to ban sachet water and other single-use plastics beginning January 2025.

According to reports, the decision was part of a broader environmental effort to address the significant plastic waste problem, which clogs drainage systems, contributes to flooding, and harms marine ecosystems.

Speaking with newsarena.ng, Miliki Daddy who is also a public commentator, economist and engineer described the decision as anti people policy, calling on the state government to have a rethink.

He said, at time like this when people struggle to make ends meet as a result of the current economic challenges, state actors must endeavor to ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerians and not compound then with such policies.

He said hundreds of sachet water factories will be forced to close down with the ban, leading to loss of jobs and purchasing power.

He said “The adverse effect of the policy that is about to be implemented in Lagos to stopping pure water factories from productions of pure water and stop lagosians from consumption would be very very disastrous.

“Now if I may ask, has the Lagos State government provided good water for consumption before coming up with the policy, what alternative has the Lagos State government come up with?

“Has the factory owners been considered or any plan of compensation in the pipeline for them? What is the fate of the pure water hawkers by our roadside that sees that as their only source of livelihood?

“How many lagosians can afford to buy 5 bottled water daily? Will bottled water price be reduced to ₦50/bottle?

“Implementing this would affect over 2,000 pure water factories in many ways and the major effect this would cause the Economy high rate of unemployment. You can’t continue to create problems thinking you are solving problems.

“What does it profit the state government in having a clean environment and face a terrible increase in crime rate. If the government complains of littering the environment with plastics, sachets of pure water. What do they have to say on biscuits wrappers & Snacks wrappers.

“The solution to stopping of littering the environment is providing trash can in strategic places in the state and let there be law enforcement agencies to arrest any offender to pay a fine of ₦10,000 – ₦20,000 by so doing people Would adjust and that would be another way of generating funds for the state government.” He concluded
