The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, has passed away at the age of 64.
A statement issued on Tuesday by his younger brother, Olawale Oyeweso, confirmed that the respected scholar died on December 2, 2025, after a brief illness.

Professor Oyeweso, a distinguished academic and renowned professor of History, was widely celebrated for his contributions to education, research, and public service.

Over the course of his career, he mentored generations of students and worked closely with colleagues, political associates, and community leaders, earning admiration across various sectors.
He is survived by his wife, children, and extended family members.
According to the family, his remains will be laid to rest at his country home in Ede by 4 p.m. today, immediately after the solat Asr.
The family prayed for Allah to grant the late professor Aljannah Firdaus and to comfort all who mourn his passing.
