HOSEC Foundation Sustains Jide Adesina’s Legacy, Organizes 3rd Female Basket Ball Tournament In Ibadan.
In an effort to sustain one of the many legacies of its former chairman, a silent philanthropist and sports enthusiast, Mr. Jide Adesina who passed away in March, 2024, a non governmental organization, Hope For Second Chance, HOSEC, foundation has successfully concluded the 3rd edition of the Jide Adesina Female basketball tournaments.
The basketball tournaments sponsored by late Mr. Jide Adesina since 2021, is an annual event to promote female basketball, empower young girls through mentorship and commemorate the international day of the girl child which comes up October 11th every year.
Mrs Ibukunoluwa Otesile while speaking with newsarena.ng shortly before the commencement of the tournament, held at Lekan Salami stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan highligted the significance of the 3rd edition of the competition, which she said was to honour and sustain the legacy of Mr Jide Adesina.
While emphasizing the importance of sports and basketball to the empowerment of the girl child , Mrs Otesile appealed to governments at all levels to give same attention to football to basketball and harness its full potentials.
“Our national female basketball team are doing well, so what are we doing at the grassroots levels to ensure there is sustainability. So it becomes necessary for us to tap into it, first it allows us to empower girls, to teach them the right skills, discipline, it also gives them something like a platform for them to thrive in sports and fulfil their dreams.”
“So what we do is that, those we’ve identified that have the interest, we provide the support for them to thrive and while we are doing that consistently, then other girls coming up will be able to channel that interest and pick up basketball.
Also speaking, Ex-super Eagles player, Mutiu Adepoju who was present at the event, expressed displeasure at the present state of sports development in the country, hence charged the government to do better.
While he encouraged the youth to go into sports based on their health and economic benefits, he called on the government to emulate other developed countries in creating an enabling environment for sports to thrive in Nigeria.
Reacting, younger brother to late Jide Adesina, Mr. Yinka Adesina said though the sponsor has passed on, the female basketball tournament in his name would be sustained beyond his lifetime.
At the end of the tournament, three out of the six teams emerged 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.
Goodness Team emerged 1st with a trophy, 150,000 and a gold medal while Proud Pantheress Team came 2nd with 100,000 and Silver medal, and team Jide Adesina came 3rd with 50,000 and Bronze Medal
