Handling Work and Family Life Pressure – Mosope Kehinde

Managing both family and work life can be a challenge for anyone, regardless of gender.

Obviously, the present economic realities in Nigeria now put more burden on people especially men, trying to cater for many basic needs for the family, at the same time meeting up with other demands from community, religious and socio cultural circles.

This is so because the society places and expects so much from men, most especially in the African settings, having the mindset that a man is solely responsible to provided all that are needed by the family.

This mindset perhaps informed the reasons many men become so addicted to their careers or vocational skills, just to make ends meet at the detriment of their own welfare, mental and general health status

No wonder the international men’s day being celebrated on the 19th of November, annually, was set aside to raise awareness about the need for men across the global to take priority in their wellbeing while they work to make ends meet.

The theme for the 2023 celebration is ”Healthy Men, Healthy World”, which signifies the importance of men’s health to the peace, progress, joy and energy the world needs to survive and maintain healthy life.

To mark this day and to further cheer up, encourage Nigerian men for their commitment to the socio economic development of the country and their care for families, it is important we remind men to always take out time to look after themselves.

Looking after themselves requires going for regular medical checks, especially for every man above the age of forty years. Taking care of yourself is critical to avoid burnout. This means making time for exercise, sleep, hobbies, and other activities that help you relax and recharge.

For men to manage both family and work without burning out, they should set realistic expectations. This means being honest with yourself and your boss about what you can and can’t do, and setting boundaries for when you will be available to work and when you need to focus on your family. Employers of labour should also show understanding to committed employees at moments when needs arise for such workers to attend to family and health matters.

Men should communicate with their families. Communication is key when it comes to managing both work and family responsibilities. Be open with your partner and children about your work schedule and explain what you need, to be successful at work.
