Gov. Aiyedatiwa Approves Release Of Convicts To Mark Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary

Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa has approved the release of 19 convicts currently serving various prison terms in the State under prerogative of mercy to mark the country’s 64th independence.

The 19 are part of the 117 inmates who benefitted from various aspects of the prerogative of mercy.

This followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, highlighting a commitment to rehabilitation and second chances within the justice system.

A release by the chief press secretary to the governor ,Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan says aside the 19 granted outright release, some others will see their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment and the rest having their sentences reduced.

The release adds that the development would pave the way for renewed hope and society reintegration opportunities for the inmates.

The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who is also the Chairman of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy , Dr Kayode Ajulo explained that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s actions were in accordance with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

He explained that the Advisory Council assessed each application, ensuring that its recommendations adhered to established guidelines taking into account a range of considerations.
