Flood Alert: Oyo Govt. Counsels Residents On Strict Adherence To Safety Measures

By Mosope Kehinde

The Oyo State Government has alerted residents across the state to the heightened risk of flash floods in June 2026 following the High Impact Based Forecast issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto said that high intensity thunderstorms and heavy surface runoff could result in temporary road overflows and community flooding, calling on residents to cooperate with government efforts to protect lives and property.

Hon. Aderinto stated that while the state government has intensified the clearing of critical drainage channels across the state, residents must also play their part by ensuring that drains, gutters and waterways around their homes and communities are free of plastic bottles, silt and other waste materials that obstruct the free flow of water.

The Commissioner further warned individuals and developers against unauthorized dredging or construction activities capable of altering natural water channels or blocking drainage paths, stressing that such actions constitute violations of Oyo State environmental laws and will attract appropriate sanctions.

He also advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, especially at night, as flash floods can be deceptive and powerful enough to sweep away vehicles and individuals.

He urged residents living in low lying valley and flood prone communities to take proactive measures by securing their lives and property, including elevating valuable household items, important documents and electrical appliances above floor level.

Parents and guardians were also advised to keep children and other vulnerable persons indoors during periods of heavy rainfall to reduce exposure to danger.

Hon. Aderinto emphasized that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into public drains and rivers remains a major cause of flash flooding, warning that enforcement teams have been deployed to intensify monitoring and prosecute offenders, particularly within the Ibadan metropolis and other densely populated areas of the state.

He assured residents that the government has activated emergency response contingency plans and urged everyone to remain calm, vigilant and be safety conscious throughout the rainy season.
