A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and four other political parties over alleged failure to meet constitutional requirements for continued registration.

Justice Peter Lifu issued the order while ruling on a suit filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, which sought to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to remove the affected parties from its register.

The parties named in the suit are the ADC, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, Accord Party and Zenith Labour Party.

The court held that the parties breached provisions of Section 225 of the 1999 Constitution.
The judgment directs INEC to commence the process of deregistering the affected political parties.
Details of the ruling and possible reactions from the parties and INEC are still being awaited.
