Nigerians have been advised to engage in small scale farming in their domains to cushion financial burden being experienced in the face of harsh economic realities.
Rector, Oyo state College Of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, Profeasor Akinola Akinlabi gave the advise while speaking with journalists at the installation of the College’s council chairman, Professor Lateef Sanni as Mogaji in Ibadan.
Professor Akinlabi who believed that agriculture is the lead way for every Nigerian said though not everyone would be able to venture into commercial agriculture there was the need for members of the public to engage in small scale farming and poultry businesses to cater for other personal responsibilities.
“No matter how small it may be, even if it is three or four acres, have a farm, you can have a poultry and you can rear 10, 15, 20 chickens and everyday, you can get eggs from it”
He also encouraged youths to stop seeking for white collar jobs, rather look inward to tap the potentials in agriculture.
Professor Akinlabi appealed to government at all levels to make land and farm inputs available for farmers to encourage more people into agriculture.
He said the mandate of his administration as the new rector of the institution was to see that every graduate from OYSCATECH is self reliance through agriculture and value change as students were engaged in practice farming.
The OYSCATECH Rector said he has prioritize entrepreneurship among students to make them self dependent.
While speaking to newsmen shortly after performing the traditional rite, the new Mogaji, Professor Lateef Sanni said the position would spur him to do more for humanity, Nigeria and Ibadan land in particular.
Professor Sanni who expressed satisfaction at the calibre of other people being installed as mogaji by the Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, said their contributions to Ibadan land would bring about development and progress to the ancient city.
