IGP Egbetokun Delivers UI Convocation Lecture, Advocates Citizens’ Participation In Nation Building

Citizens’ participation in Nation Building has been identified as a vital role that holds leaders accountable, enhances Security and drives policy changes for National development.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mr Kayode Egbetokun stated this while delivering the University of Ibadan 2024 convocation lecture at the Trenchard hall university of Ibadan, titled “ Unlocking Progress: The Indispensable trio of Security, Governance, and citizens responsibility”.

Mr Egbetokun said in any democracy, when citizens fulfill their obligations such as voting, paying taxes, participating in community service and upholding the law, they contribute to national stability, transparency and growth.

He explained that if all the civic duties were neglected, it would lead to governance failures, corruption and societal discontent which could hinder the development of the country.

The IGP stated further that the law enforcement’s presence and activities are also vital in determining criminal acts, enforcing laws and providing a sense of safety to the public for National development.

He said the Police force had put in place different mechanisms to ensure that the lives and property of the citizens remain paramount.

He noted that they have contributed directly to national security by identifying and neutralizing threats before they escalate as well as partnering with others sisters agencies to collectively wage war against insecurity bedeviling the Country.

Mr Egbetokun said to achieve a safe and secured society, all stakeholders must partner the security agencies through intelligence sharing as they are closer to the grassroots.

He stated further that it would go a long way if Government at all levels ensure that they provide all necessary assistance to improve living standard of citizens as well as empowering the youths.

The IGP noted that Synergy among government, citizens and security would surmount the challenges of insecurity in Nigeria and it will be well secured and governed.

Earlier, while declaring the event open, the Vice Chancellor University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale appreciated the inspector General of Police for his participation and promised to partner the Police by giving out useful information to collectively wage war against insecurity, especially in the institution and state at large.
