Story Behind The Name “Iwere-Ile”, A Town In Oyo State
By: Paul Asawale
Iwere- Ile, in Iwajowa local government area of Oyo state came to be around the 16th century. This was during the reign of Oranmiyan, the first Alaafin of Oyo who left Ile-Ife.
He established Ọ̀YÓ̩-Ọ̀RỌ̀ by then. After him, some elders too thought they were cheated in the ascendancy to the throne of Alaafin, they decided to leave Ọ̀yó̩-ọ̀rọ̀. They consulted Ifa, Ifa gave them leave.
He told them to go with the prescribed sacrifice which was a wooden rod, and a Gizzard of a hen (IWE). They were told to hang the gizzard on the wooden rod. That anywhere they got to, they should pin the gizzard rod to the ground, if it falls by itself, that should be their home. They should establish themselves there.
They passed through Igboho, Saki, Tede, the gizzard did not fall. They proceeded. When they got to a Rocky Mountain called O̩LÓ̩FIN they pitched the wooden rod by its base, the women stayed at the base while the men climbed up.
Suddenly there was a loud noise from the women to the men up saying “Iwe ti re oooo”, meaning “the gizzard has fallen ooo” the men now ran down, saw it as the women said and decided to establish their kingdom there as Ifa foretold.
They called it “IWE RE”, where the gizzard fell. As time goes on, it becomes “Iwere- Ile”, the home/place where the gizzard fell. Some of the men that left Ò̩yó̩-Ò̩rò̩ then to found Iwere were: Akinola, Agbonju and Akinrere.
