Public schools in Oko, Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State, on Monday joined the strike declared by the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, in protest against the abduction of teachers and students in some schools in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

Radio Nigeria Correspondent, who visited some of the schools within Oko metropolis, observed that they were under lock and key, while those without doors and windows played host to goats.

A few pupils and students who were unaware of the strike resumed early in the morning but were disappointed to meet their school gates locked but they later returned home.

One of the teachers in Oko, who pleaded anonymity, stated that the strike ought to have been declared earlier.
Some students were also seen playing football in open fields within the Oko community.
In the same vein, public primary and secondary schools in Oyo town complied with the directive of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, N. U. T to embark on protest against the abduction of pupils and their teachers in Oriire local government area of Oyo state.
While private schools opened as usual, some parents kept away their children at home, saying the strike ought to have caught across all schools in the state.
A parent, Mrs. Aisha Aremu, in Mabolaje area noted that the N. U. T directive was in order and worth considering by the private schools proprietors.
Meanwhile, the economy of the ancient city which largely depends on the education sector has gone on low ebb in the areas of public transportation and food vending following reduction in schools attendance.
It would be recalled that seventeen days ago, gunmen stormed Baptist Nursery and Primary Schools in Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, abducting seven teachers and thirty-nine students.
