Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has swore in 19 newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday.
Yakubu urged the newly swore in RECs at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, where the event was held, to pledge their commitment to Nigeria and not jeopardize the commission’s independence.
In accordance with INEC regulations that prohibit a commissioner from serving in his or her home state, he also assigned the 19 RECs to their geopolitical zones but outside of their states of origin.
According to sources from INEC in Oyo state, Dr. Tella Rahmon was appointed and deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to supervise the elections in Oyo State in 2023.
Lawyer and Ph.D. Mutiu Agboke, the former Oyo REC, has been assigned to the neighboring Osun.
Adeniran in Ekiti has been replaced as REC by Ayo Salami, a professor and recent vice-chancellor of First Technical University, Tech-U, Ibadan.
