The Action Democratic Party Governorship Candidate for the 2023 election in Oyo State, Mr. Akim Yusuf says he would declare state of emergency on education sector, if elected as governor.
Mr. Yusuf stated this while reacting to the recent delist of 50 secondary schools in Oyo State by the West African Examination Council, WAEC over malpractices
He described the development as embarrassing for the status of the pace setter state which is reputable for recording and hosting first class institutions like the premier University of Ibadan, University College Hospital and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture llTA.
“It is an unfortunate incident that shows the extent of decay in our educational system.
We will engage WAEC to get these schools back on board as soon as possible by correcting institution-specific and general challenges.”
Mr. Yusuf, a finance expert, noted that his administration would revisit the regular and continuous measurement of academic standards or performance of students from the Junior Secondary School, JSS1 with a view to identifying individual students’ strengths and weaknesses in a strong guidance & counselling environment to ensure that subject selections were tied to students’ capabilities.
“We will rebuild our education system from scratch by frontally addressing the challenges of dilapidated infrastructure, teaching aid, continuous teacher training and specially incentivising teaching to attract high quality teachers.”
Mr. Yusuf added that his administration would put in place curriculum enrichment measures to expand the intellectual base of the products of various Oyo schools and restore the excellent performance at the external examinations and international competitions.
