A women and child Rights foundation, Hope For Second Chance Foundation, HOSEC, says it is launching an ambitious nationwide campaign to raise awareness about child labour and promote access to quality education for every child.
In a statement issued in Ibadan and signed by its Executive Director, Mrs Ibukunoluwa Otesile in commemoration of this year’s child Labour Day, states that the initiative aimed to foster a supportive environment that encourages children to dream big and realize their true potential.
The statement reads in part:
“The campaign will focus on three critical pillars:
“Education Support: it has been said that how one appears affects how one is addressed. Self- esteem is no doubt boosted by appearance. Children are not any different. In the light of this, identified vulnerable children would be provided New Uniforms and other educational support materials to help to contribute to a decent appearance and in turn boost their self-confidence and desire to stay in school. ”
“Advocacy and Policy Reform: We will engage with policymakers and stakeholders to advocate for stronger legislation against child labour and ensure its effective implementation. Through strategic partnerships, we will work towards creating an environment where child rights are protected, and perpetrators of child labour are held accountable.”
“Community Engagement: Hosec Foundation recognizes the importance of community involvement in combating child labour. We will leverage on the strength and reach of the mass media, to sensitize parents, guardians, and community leaders about the long-term detrimental effects of child labour. By fostering a culture of child protection, we can build a future free from exploitation.”
“Education and Social Programs: Investing in quality education and social programs is paramount to breaking the cycle of child labour. The government should increase the allocated education funds to improve access and quality of education, especially for marginalized and vulnerable communities. Additionally, comprehensive social programs should be implemented to support families in need, ensuring that children are not forced into labour due to economic hardships.”
“Strengthening Partnerships: Ending child labour requires a collaborative effort from all stakeholders. We encourage the government to strengthen partnerships with non-profit organizations, international bodies, corporations, and academia to leverage expertise, resources, and innovative solutions. Together, we can create sustainable change and ensure a brighter future for Nigerian children.”

“Effective Enforcement: Legislation alone is insufficient without robust enforcement mechanisms. We urge the Nigerian government to allocate adequate resources and establish specialized units within law enforcement agencies to effectively monitor workplaces, conduct inspections, and hold perpetrators of child labour accountable. Collaboration between relevant government departments, civil society organizations, and international stakeholders is crucial for successful enforcement efforts.
