Stakeholders Advocate Synergy At Developing National Physical Planning Standards In Nigeria

The process of concluding the preparation of the National Physical Planning Standards (NPPS) document should be supported actively by all players and key stakeholders at all levels.

This is part of the resolutions arrived at the end of a 2-day Western regional workshop of Town Planning Directors and Experts for the development of NPPS held at the International conference center,Ibadan.

According to a communique signed by the workshop coordination and , a Director in the Urban and Regional Development Unit of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing,Mr David Olakunde, every player at all levels should make efforts in ensuring increased stakeholders’ involvement in the finalisation of the NPPS document.

“All necessary adjustments of the current draft should be made to ensure that all cultural and traditional peculiarities of the Western region of Nigeria are accommodated as much as possible.

“Special attention should be given to effective execution of the final NPPS document and necessary institutional adjustments should be made to drive its successful implementation

“The final NPPS document shall serve as a basic guidebook and provide minimum standards to be adopted across Nigeria,” the communique read.

The workshop was organised by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing (FMWH), with the support of Oyo State Government to further drive the ongoing process of preparing a NPPS for Nigeria.

Eighty-three participants including frontline stakeholders and delegations from the six South west states, participated in the workshop.

The participants consisted of directors and heads of institutions involving in town planning activities within public and private sector.

They included officials of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Town Planners Registration Council (TOPREC), members of the Academia and other relevant stakeholders
