The University of Ibadan Community has commiserated with the family, friends and the intellectual community over the death of a Foremost African Linguist, and Foundation President of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose.
His death was announced earlier today Saturday, July 25, 2026 at the age of 94.
Emeritus Professor Bamgbose was the First Professor of Linguistics in Africa and served the University of Ibadan meritoriously as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1971 to 1973.
He was a distinguished contributor to the academic and intellectual life of the Nation.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, on behalf of the University of Ibadan Community commiserated with the family, friends and the intellectual community he left behind.
Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose was born in Odopotu, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on 27 January, 1932 and died on Saturday July 25, 2026.
