50% Telecom Tariff: Nigerians’ Interest Will Be Safeguarded During Ongoing Discussions – Reps’ Member, “OdidiOmo” Assures
Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Stanley Dhikrullahi Olajide, has assured Nigerians that their interest will be safeguarded during ongoing discussions on the recent approval of a 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs by the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC)
Olajide, who represents Ibadan North-west/Ibadan South-west federal constituency of Oyo at the national assembly, stated that, though, the commission settled on a 50% adjustment to balance industry sustainability with consumer affordability, the NCC’s decision, announced on January 20, 2025, came after telecom operators requested a 100% tariff hike to address escalating operational costs due to high inflation and currency devaluation.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by telecom operators and also emphasized the importance of protecting consumers, who are worst hit by the proposed tariff hike.
“Though, we understand the economic pressures on both the industry and the populace, we are committed to ensuring that any tariff adjustments is fair and justifiable,” he stated.
While urging for calm and patience from the public as deliberations continue, Hon. Olajide assured Nigerians, that the House of Representatives is closely monitoring the situation and will engage with all relevant stakeholders, including the NCC, telecom operators and consumer advocacy groups, to ensure that the interests of Nigerians are prioritized.
