Protest In Ondo Over EFCC’s Raid On Night Clubs As Govt., Police React

There was protest in Ondo State on Monday 10th June, 2024, over alleged unprofessional conduct of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC during a night raid of clubs in Akure, the state capital..

Reports has it that the protesters gathered at First Bank area in Akure and took their demonstration to Governor’s Office through NEPA roundabout.

Speaking with journalists, Mr Oluwaseun Ogunmola demanded the release of those arrested and profiled as internet fraudsters unconditionally.

Another protester, Tobi Akinnubi condemned a situation where the commission sees everyone using expensive phones, laptops and cars as fraudsters saying this was pure brutality.

The protesters who carried placards with inscriptions such as “End EFCC,” “EFCC free our brothers,” “We don’t scam, give us jobs,” and “EFCC stop the extortion and harassment among others asked for justice and called on the Federal Government to look into this case .#

Addressing the protesters, Secretary to the State Government Mr Tayo Oluwatuyi, and the Ondo State Commissioner for Youths , Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye gave an assurance that the government would work towards securing the release of those arrested.

Mr Oluwatuyi, however enjoined the protesters not to take laws into their hands .

Also speaking, the state police command has called for calm over the issue.

The command’s public relations officer , Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami- Omisanya said the Inspector-General of Police and the state government were already aware of the incident and were taking steps to ensure that all concerns were addressed without prejudice.

The EFCC Ibadan Zonal Directorate had claimed responsibility for the arrest of 127 persons suspected to be internet fraudsters
