As part of efforts to strengthen the safety and security of schools across Oyo State, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, today held a security sensitization programme at the Ido Local Government Secretariat Hall, Ido, Ibadan.
The programme brought together traditional rulers, education stakeholders, security personnel, principals, teachers, and pupils and students from primary and secondary schools to deliberate on the roles of all stakeholders in tackling insecurity in schools and ensuring a safe learning environment.
The Executive Chairman of Ido Local Government, Hon. Sheriff Aderemi Adeojo, commended the initiative, describing it as timely in view of the security challenges confronting educational institutions in parts of the country.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting programmes that promote the safety, welfare, and academic development of children across the local government.
The Chairman also appreciated the unwavering support of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, whose commitment to peace, security, and quality education continues to strengthen development at the grassroots.
Delivering the welcome address, ACP Olaoye Adeola, Area Commander, J Area Command, NSCDC, Ido, emphasized the need for sustained collaboration among security agencies, school administrators, parents, traditional institutions, and communities to safeguard schools against emerging security threats.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Prince Steve Oyebode, who highlighted the increasing need for vigilance and preparedness in schools.
He identified major factors responsible for insecurity in schools to include terrorism and insurgency, banditry and mass kidnapping for ransom, porous borders and the proliferation of arms, socio-economic challenges, weak law enforcement, poor community relations, and politically motivated violence. He stressed that while many attacks on schools are externally driven, inadequate internal preparedness often makes schools more vulnerable when such threats occur.
Also speaking at the event, the Onido of Ido reflected on the security challenges previously experienced within the community and explained how collaboration among traditional rulers, security agencies, government, and residents had helped to reduce such threats. He urged schools and communities to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with timely information.
The programme also featured interactive sessions with principals, teachers, pupils, and students, who were encouraged to be security conscious, report suspicious activities promptly, and contribute to creating safer school environments.
The event was attended by the traditional rulers across Ido Local Government, school administrators, teachers, pupils, students, community leaders, and other stakeholders, all of whom reaffirmed their commitment to protecting schools and ensuring that education thrives in a peaceful and secure environment.
