PHOTOS: Oyo Govt. Seals Buildings, Shops Over Unhygienic Practices

Due to unsanitary practices, the Oyo state government on Saturday closed off some homes and businesses around Academy Market, Ibadan

Residents and the shop’s owners, according to the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Abiodun Oni, broke environmental regulations and disregarded the established hygienic norms.

The Commissioner through the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Ademola Aderinto explained that the buildings were sealed off as part of the ongoing awareness-raising and enforcement campaign of the State Government to recognize this year’s World Clean-up Day

He claimed that the exercise was carried out to ensure complete adherence to environmental hygiene and prevent any potential disease breakout, noting that environmental health officers had previously visited the affected properties and advised the owners to take the necessary action but they had not.

The Commissioner stated that the affected buildings don’t have enough trash cans, which is why there are piles of debris dumped along the main highways and in the marketplace.

Additionally, the Oyo State Government and Mottainai Recycling Ltd. retrieved 5, 170 kilos of plastic debris during clean-up efforts at the Academy Community Market in Ibadan as part of events commemorating this year’s World Clean-up Day.

The team also recovered One Thousand, One Hundred (1,100) kilograms of cartons from the market.

Mr. Ademola Aderinto also appealed to residents to key into the Oyo State Government’s environmental blueprint.

“Marketplaces are by nature unkempt with practices that are harmful to the ecosystem, but Oyo State Government believes that with continuous sensitisation and enforcement, we can make the traders understand the importance of a neat location for business”, Aderinto said.
