A fire outbreak has destroyed goods worth millions of naira as it ravaged 17 shops at the Moniya market in the Akinyele Local Government area of Oyo State.
The blaze, which began around half past twelve in the night, is believed to have been triggered by a power surge.
During visit to the scene, it was gathered that the fire caused significant damage, with valuable goods and cash destroyed.
The babaloja of Moniya garage, Mr. Kolawole Balogun, said they were alerted by a security guard about the fire.
They expressed deep concern over the damage and losses caused by the fire.
Some victims of the inferno, including Mrs. Yetunde Musa, Mr. Ajetunmobi Idowu, Mr. Olaide Badmus, Mr. Balogun Sulaimon, and Ajetunmobi Kolawole, called on the government to provide immediate support for those affected.
Reacting, Chairman, Akinyele local government, Mr Wole Akinleye,who visited the market sympathised with the traders and also advised them to always ensure that all electrical appliances were put off before closing their shops to avoid future occurrence of fire outbreak.
He added that the government will not only assisted them financially, it will also conduct sensitisation programme for traders on fire prevention in the nearest future.
