The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has given reasons the commission cannot afford further extension to the July 31st deadline of the continuous voters registration exercise.
The commission however insisted that there will not be any extension of the Continuous Voter Registration after the 31st of this month.
Festus Okoye, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Committee on Information and Voter Education, made this claim in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Abuja.
Any further extension, according to Mr. Okoye, would have a negative impact on the commission’s other scheduled exercises.
The exercise, which started in June last year and was supposed to end on June 30 of this year, had to be prolonged by one month, according to Mr. Okoye.
He consequently believed that the exercise had enough time.
The National Commissioner also emphasized that not everyone should register in the ongoing exercise, just those who had never done so or had recently turned 18 years old.
According to the INEC spokesman, the commission had increased the exercise machines, registration locations, and even the registration hours.
Therefore, he urged people who had not yet registered to take advantage of the short window of time
